Alienware 18 Review

Published

on

Alienware has always been at the forefront when it comes to gaming PCs, and now they have released a new beast that will surely blow the minds of gamers, the Alienware 18. This gaming laptop can outplay most of the high-end gaming desktops currently that are in the same price range.

Hardware

Unlike most gaming laptops, the Alienware 18 boasts a huge 18-inch 1080 HD screen. Although it does not have the most impressive screens available, it does manage to provide gamers with vibrant colors and blackest blacks, which still makes for a very nice gaming experience.

An Intel i7 processor provides the power for the Alienware 18, which means you have more than enough processing power for even the most demanding games. The Intel Core i7-4910MQ is a quad-core processor with an initial clock speed of 2.9 GHz, but you can bump it up to 3.9 GHz using Turbo Boost.

The Alienware 18 also comes with 16GB of high-speed RAM, which is clearly more than enough for most games. However, you can add more if you feel that waiting for a couple of microseconds more for your game to load is excruciating.

The most impressive feature of the Alienware 18 is that not only does it have one of the most powerful graphics adapters out there – it actually has two. Under the hood of the Alienware 18 are two Nvidia GeForce GTX 880M’s; this means you can play even the most demanding games at high settings without any problems whatsoever. One thing that you need to remember though is that only one of the video cards is functional straight out of the box, you have to tweak with the Nvidia settings to turn on the other one.

Design

As with most gaming laptops, the Alienware 18 is a bit on the thick side. Measuring 17.97″ x 12.90″ x 2.26″ and weighing more than 12 pounds, the Alienware 18 is by no means compact. In fact, it is so massive that many believe that it can stop a.45 caliber bullet fired at medium range. If you do plan to get this gaming laptop, you should invest in a good bag to carry it around, preferably one with wheels so you don’t have to strain your back too much.

All kidding aside, even though the Alienware 18 is massive, it is a sleek piece of hardware. The panels fit so flush together that when you close the lid you will not find any gaps. An immense amount of attention to detail went into this gaming laptop; clearly it is one of the nicest looking gaming rigs that you can find anywhere.

Price and Verdict

Now here is where most people will feel a bit uncomfortable. These bells and whistles do not come cheap; the Alienware 18 retails at around US$4,200, which is on the top part of the price spectrum. However, you can probably see that its huge price tag is justifiable, seeing that this is one powerful piece of gaming hardware. Yes, you can build a similar desktop PC well under the Alienware 18’s price point, but it is doubtful that it will look and perform as smoothly.
