What is MyAnimeList?

MyAnimeList, or MAL for short, is a volunteer-run anime and manga social networking and social cataloging application website. Users may categorize and rate anime and manga using a list-like method on the site. It makes it easier to discover others with similar interests and has a giant anime and manga database. It is a kind of random anime generator. The website claimed to contain 4.4 million anime and 775,000 manga entries as of 2008. In 2015, the site had 120 million monthly visitors.

Garrett Gyssler created the site in November 2004 and was the only maintainer until 2008. AnimeList was the original name of the website, but Garret Gyssler chose to add the possessive “My” at the start, following the trend of the most popular social network at the time.

In April 2016, My AnimeList revealed embedded episodes from Crunchyroll and Hulu straight into the site, totaling over 20,000 episodes.

When site administrators pulled MAL down for maintenance in May and June 2018, claiming security and privacy concerns, it was unavailable for many days. Third-party applications were also rendered useless by the site’s administrators, who blocked the API for them. The changes were made to comply with the GDPR program of the European Union.

In January 2019, Media Do purchased My Anime List, announcing their desire to concentrate on marketing and ebook sales to improve the site.

HIDIVE and MyAnimeList app announced a collaboration on September 25, 2019. MyAnimeList’s content ratings would be integrated into HIDIVE’s streaming platform, and My Anime List members would get a curated selection of embedded HIDIVE material for free.

How to use myanimelist to the maximum extent?

  • Learn how to pronounce the anime’s name in Japanese.
  • Look for the most significant anime in a particular genre.

  • Know the release date or amount of episodes for an anime that has yet to be released;
  • On the forum, you may ignore and block people.
  • You may write and read reviews on anime and manga.

Without a doubt, myanimelist is the internet’s most extensive anime database of anime and manga.

Things you should notice:

Approximately 90% of users on myanimelist.net are likely in their first or second year of anime viewing. As a result, every anime is the greatest thing ever to them, and perhaps they will develop a more refined taste in anime in the future. I’m not suggesting that people abandon mainstream anime in favor of niche programming.

People know that MAL isn’t a fair or accurate method of determining how “excellent” an anime is. So keep track of which anime you’ve watched, which you want to see, and which you’ve given up using myanimelist.net. Just don’t accept myanimelist twitter’s ratings and reviews as gospel. My question is whether or not MyAnimeList performs a decent job. Should you watch what you want to see?

Sites like MAL, as well as sites like IMDB, have some bias and may be manipulated. There is no objective method to judge how “excellent” something is since we all have different preferences that influence how we like and dislike things. However, such sites may provide a rough idea of popularity and interest among specific Western populations.

Is AnimeList Safe to use or not?

Many people think of myanimelist.net as a location to judge an anime’s quality, but how reliable is my anime list? Are all ratings on myanimelist.net fair and accurate, or do fanboys and haters give them out candy?

In my opinion, review aggregation sites such as myanimelist.net do not adequately inform you whether or not anything is excellent. However, take into account both critics’ and the audience’s critical and favorable feedback. One significant difference between critic and audience reviews is that reviewers go into more depth on the performance, pacing, photography, etc. At the same time, the crowd will typically speak about how they felt it was the most significant or worst thing ever.

By that reasoning, Sword Art Online would be deemed a successful anime if My Anime List was appropriate for evaluating an anime’s success. Sword Art Online has a score of 7.41 on myanimelist.net, which indicates that the show is excellent according to the Myanimelist twitter rating system. I’m sure some would argue that SAO isn’t a decent anime. But what about a show like Love Live School Idol Project, which isn’t as well-known? That program has a score of 7.51 on Myanimelist.net, which is ten points higher than SAO. However, there is an issue here: SAO has 1,757,905 members on MAL, whereas Love Live School Idol Project has 301,927.

This may be because SAO is more well-known than the Love Live School Idol Project. Is it appropriate to compare Sword Art Online to Love Live School Idol Project since the two anime are dissimilar? Probably not, although individuals seem to be prejudiced towards particular genres; for example, if you like isekai anime, you’re likely to give it positive ratings. If you like ecchi anime, you will almost certainly give it positive reviews.

The same could be said for every anime genre that people love or despise. The point here is that the bulk of MAL’s anime evaluations are more subjective than objective. Of course, art is personal, and their emotions may influence people’s reactions to it. Clannad is still one of my favorite anime series, but I began to realize that the illusionary universe didn’t make much sense to me. Or the fact that the conclusion was a restart. I’m sure the visual novel will explain things better.

Conclusion:

MAL, in my opinion, does a decent job of what it sets out to do: provide a place for anime fans to connect and manage their watchlist. If you accept recommendations, I still believe MAL Reddit is a decent place to start since most (though not all) of the suggestions are still very excellent. Because everyone’s taste in anime is diverse, any recommendation/review should be taken with a grain of salt.
