Is The New American Standard 2020 Bible Good
The new NASB 2020 edition
The Lockman foundation first introduced the NAS translation of the Greek and Hebrew scripture in the early 1970’s. Since then the 2020 edition is the third major update. Before this update the last major update was in 1995. They have updated the ’95 only minimally.
In order to understand the formatting of the NASB 2020 edition be sure to read the “Explanation of the general format.” This will help you navigate the footnotes which are pretty rich in some places and slim pickings or modicum in other places. Understand the quotation marks, Italics, Capitalization of words, small caps, asterisks, and abbreviations. Understanding the formatting will aid YOU the reader of this translation to understand the meaning of the text to a greater degree of knowledge.

The NASB 2020 edition
I have had plenty of time to read through and get accustomed to this translation, and one tip I would give you before you even begin reading your nasb 2020 edition, you should read the forward which explains…
- The Lockman project overall view to the NASB 2020
- The NASB 2020 aim and general philosophy and principles of the translation.
The Bible I have has a genuine leather cover with gold lettering (embossing) on the spine, it wasn’t the usual Romans font but a new more comfort clear San serif font.
Pros of the NASB 2020 edition
- Paragraph formatting is perfect for reading and the two column text is what we normally find in most bibles that aren’t specifically for reading. At the time of this writing they have not come out with a verse by verse.
- NASB 2020 edition bible comes equipped with a really good A to Z topical reference which is great for word studies.
- I really like that they have included a section titled all the parables of Jesus in the back. This is something that you only find in an older World publishing bible or a good study bible
- The bible maps are colorful and on heavy card stock. They are not indexed but they are annotated.
- The tab is a little tight but not tight enough to keep the bible open from Genesis on flat surface. This is uncommon for sure for not being a premium bible. Also this is a big perk for pastors and teachers or for home bible studies.
Cons of the NASB 2020
- The 2020 edition of the NASB that I have is not smyth sewn, it is a glue down much like your hard back and paperback books. With consistent use this bible it will eventually break down within 5 to 15 years. Of course this depends on how well you take care of this bible. If you leave it in your car maybe just a year or two.
- A little pet peeve of mine that I have is that the introduction to each book of the bible is in the back of the book and not at the beginning of the books themselves. I am a little lazy okay?
- I am not to crazy for the gender accuracy of the NASB 2020, simply because gender accuracy wasn’t in the original Greek or Hebrew text. It’s not a game changer, they actually don’t change the meaning of the text.
One thing that I don’t like about the majority text, is that it skips verses. The NASB 2020 edition does the same. In Mathew chapter six it dumps the later part the Lords prayer “For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” My footnotes tell me Late MSS add this. Well I check all of my majority text versions and they have this later part included. So, why are they dropping verses that are already in the majority text

Conclusion of the NASB 2020 edition
Over all this is a really good Bible translation and they are coming out with many different style bibles to choose from. I have a giant print which is great if you are older and or need a giant print bible due to eye disabilities. It is a good reading bible with no cross references, bible commentary or a lot of foot notes slowing down the reading of your bible time.
